No, they aren’t my cup of tea. Pocahontas is my least favorite of all the changes. Ariel actually looks significantly improved in my opinion. Tiana obviously didn’t change at all. Rapunzel’s face scares me a bit, so does Belle’s hair.
But none of that matters. The aesthetics of the princesses don’t matter. The stories matter. The stories didn’t change.
Snow White still braved spooky woods and was woke with a kiss. Cinderella still suffered under abusive family conditions and danced with the Prince. Aurora still fell asleep and Phillip still fought a dragon to get to her. Ariel still traversed a new world and took risks and saved Eric’s life- twice. Belle still longed for a life of adventure and freed a whole palace of furniture by melting a beast’s ice-cold heart. Jasmine still found freedom in love with Aladdin. Pocahontas still saved John Smith’s life and taught him of nature’s glory. Mulan still saved an entire country from destruction. Tiana still got her restaurant and taught Naveen the meaning of hard work. Rapunzel still overcame her mother’s tyranny and redeemed a thief.
The stories didn’t change. The stories are what matter.
